New York City Rug Tour

Last month was the 10th anniversary of my trip to New York to learn more about rug cleaning and rug origin identification. The two day class was hosted by a certified instructor, Doug Heiferman, on Long Island. He was assisted by the long time Oriental rug expert Barry O’Connell who traveled from the D.C. area.

On the first day we rode the L.I. railroad to and back from the well known Rug District in downtown NY NY, where our group visited two well established Oriental rug dealers. We saw many rugs at each shop and were instructed on rug identification by visually and physically handling many rugs from our gracious hosts. Many of us purchased rugs also. As a bonus all of the class participants dined at a wonderful Persian restaurant across the street before returning to Long Island.

The second day we jumped on the rug wash floor for hands on boots on training of cleaning wool rugs and synthetic rugs. We learned the basics and also how to wash area rugs with urine contamination. That afternoon we learned more about area rug construction and rug identification which in turn helps the rug washer to know how and what to use for successful results.
